Case Study: Utilizing the Piano as an Emotional Thermostat for Level 3 ASD and Echolalia.

In working with this student, now age 5, I noticed that he possesses a strong preference for executing his scales on the lowest register of the piano. Once I introduced the concept of intervals, I observed that he distinctly preferred exploring minor intervals—specifically minor thirds, followed closely by perfect fourths. I wondered if there was a direct neurological correlation between this auditory preference and his autism. My research and susequent assessment confirmed a direct correlation: my student’s shift from rigid structural patterns (such as mechanical scales and inversions) to exploring minor thirds in the lower register reflected his profound musical and emotional growth. He was actively transitioning from mechanical replication to selfsoothing and creative exploration. Specifically, the minor third is the foundational interval that defines the emotional color of a minor chord. By stripping away the full chordal structure and focusing purely on the third, he effectively eliminates surrounding harmonic "noise," enabling him to focus entirely on his immediate mood and subsequent expression. Furthermore, minor thirds played in the lower half of the piano create a dark, warm, and enclosed soundscape, rendering them "safe" acoustic spaces. For a child with Level 3 ASD, this register constructs an auditory "womb" or sensory shield against an outside world they interpret as loud and unpredictable. Interestingly, verbal echolalia can be directly compared to this style of musical expression. While verbal echolalia is the literal repetition of spoken words, the random, repetitive playing of memorized scales and inversions can be construed as "musical echolalia." His desire to break away from these rigid routines to play minor thirds is a highly positive developmental sign; he is actively seeking to break the behavioral "script" by experimenting with his own musical thoughts. In essence, my young student is discovering a state of self-regulation where playing minor intervals corresponds perfectly to his internal emotional state or sensory needs. Consequently, he is learning to utilize the piano as an "emotional thermostat" to calm his nervous system and alleviate anxiety. His precise focus on specific inversions further assists in providing him with additional structural comfort. I next considered his strong preference for flat scales over sharp scales. I uncovered another fascinating, direct correlation between his Level 3 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), his echolalia, his high innate musicality, and his preference for complex flat keys. Research confirms that children on the autism spectrum are up to 500 times more likely to possess absolute (perfect) pitch than the neurotypical population. Because of this heightened auditory sensitivity, the "darker," more mellow, and warm timbre of flat keys is perceived as deeply comforting, in stark contrast to the sharp, piercing, and bright frequencies of sharp keys. I recently observed another interesting phenomenon in my sunroom studio. On the piano utilized for his lessons, I display two crystal candlesticks. During a recent session, he began singing "Happy Birthday" while pretending to blow out the candles, a routine that quickly became a comforting obsession. Again, I researched and analyzed whether a harmonic correlation existed. The definitive answer is yes; there is a powerful harmonic correlation. When I accompanied him on the piano in the Key of F major, a significant breakthrough occurred. While the melody of "Happy Birthday" begins on a C, the very first chord progression resolves directly to F major, which contains his absolute favorite "security blanket" note: B-flat (the fourth scale degree, and the root of the subdominant Bb chord). My accompaniment promoted an immediate shift from solitary play to a shared social interaction. This shared "vocal echolalia" now provides my student with a highly predictable vocal framework, enabling a safe method for practicing and enjoying vocalization. By utilizing the familiar lyrics of the song, he has begun to express spontaneous creativity regarding whose birthday he is celebrating. He has transitioned from singing "Dear Mommy" to recently singing "Dear Marcy". As such, he is basically utilizing a functional behavioral script to connect directly with me. In essence, he acts as the "conductor" of the interaction, engaging in joint attention. I am thrilled to state that my student's recent experiences represent a massive developmental milestone as a 5-year-old student with Level 3 ASD and echolalia who has been training with me for under two years.
